What is Inherited Release Method and How Does it Work?
What Is Inherited Release Method (IRM)?
Have you ever felt a fear, a heaviness, or a reaction that seems bigger than the moment calls for and couldn’t quite trace it back to anything in your own life? Sometimes what we’re carrying isn’t only ours.
That is exactly what IRM addresses. The understanding that the environment we grow up in, the traumas, the stress and even the illnesses carried by the generations before us can be held within our own bodies, even when we never lived through those experiences ourselves. A parents unspoken grief, a grandparent’s survival instinct forged in fear, scarcity or loss, these don;t simply end with the person who lived them. They can be passed down through cellular memory and carried forward, quietly shaping how we respond to the world long before we’re old enough to understand why.
A growing body of research in epigenetics supports what body-based practitioners have long observed, that stress and trauma can leave biological marks that influence gene expression and that these effects may in some cases, be passed to the next generation. Inherited Release Method works directly with these inherited patterns, whenever and however they’re held.
The Patterns We Inherit
Stress, trauma, and survival responses don’t only come from our own lived experience. They can be passed down through family lines, through the emotional patterns we absorb growing up, and through what many practitioners and researchers now understand as inherited patterns held in the body itself. A grandparent’s unspoken grief, a parent’s survival instinct forged in hardship, a family history of fear around scarcity or safety. These can live on in the body long after their original context is gone.
Where do they live? In tissue. In cellular memory. In the nervous system’s learned responses. In the subtler energetic layers we carry without ever consciously choosing to.
Why the Body Holds On
Your body’s innate intelligence has one job above all else: to keep you safe. When you experience stress, physical, emotional or inherited, your nervous system responds the way it’s designed to: activating, bracing, adapting. This is a normal, protective response.
The trouble comes when that response never fully resets. In a healthy system, once the threat passes, the body is meant to return to it’s baseline. Stress hormones settle, the nervous system downshifts and the body releases what no longer needs. But when a survival response never recieves a clear enough signal that the danger has passed, the body wont’t relax back to where it started. Instead, it keeps adaptation running quietlty in the background, in the tissue, the cells and in patterns held throughout the body.
Over time, this ongoing cost of staying “on” can show up as physical tension, emotional reactivity or patterns that no longer make sense in your present life.
This isn’t a flaw or malfunction. It’s the same innate intelligence that was protecting you all along, still doing it’s job, simply waiting for the message that it’s safe to stand down.
How a Session Works
Every IRM session begins with muscle testing, a way of listening to the body directly, rather than guessing or intellectualizing what it might be holding. This tells me where a pattern lives and what it’s connected to. From there, IRM works through a combination of hands-on touch and energetic technique, moving between the physical and energetic layers as the body’s own responses guide the session.
This isn’t talk therapy, and we’re not analyzing or retelling the story intellectually, instead, the work meets the body directly, in the language it already holds the pattern in.
What Release Can Feel Like
As the body registers that it’s safe to let go, these old, inherited, and unconscious patterns can begin to soften. Nothing is being forced out, the same innate intelligence that created the pattern in the first place is simply being reminded that it no longer needs this old strategy.
Release isn’t always instant ease and it’s worth knowing what to expect.
Emotions that were held for a long time can surface and be expressed, and it’s common to feel a little tender in the days that follow.
Physically, if your body has been bracing in a certain pattern for a long time, it may take a little while to find its way back to alignment, some stiffness or soreness isn’t unusual.
On a deeper level, if something is being cleared or processed, you might notice symptoms like headaches, an upset stomach, or simply feeling a little “off” for a day or two.
This isn’t a step backward, it’s a sign that your body is genuinely changing, not just settling back into the same old pattern.
What follows, though, is real: a felt sense of ease, lightness, and coming back to yourself, your truest alignment, closer to who you were always meant to be underneath the bracing and adaptation.
A Note on How I Work
Inherited Release Method (IRM) is one of several modalities I’ve trained in alongside Spinal Flow Technique, BodyTalk, tuning fork healing, Theta Healing, the Cardinal Method of Life Connection, and Reiki but I rarely work from just one.
Every session is formulated intuitively, in the moment, based on what your body is asking for. Some sessions call for tuning forks; others don’t. Some clients respond to essential oils as a sensory anchor; others don’t need them at all. There’s no fixed formula, because no two people or sessions are the same. The way I work is shaped entirely by what you, specifically, need in that moment.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to support you through this work.
