What Is Tuning Fork Healing, and How Does It Work?

Sound has been used as a healing tool across cultures for thousands of years, and tuning fork therapy brings that same principle into a precise, intentional practice. A tuning fork is a simple metal instrument that vibrates at an exact, unchanging pitch when struck and when that vibration is introduced to the body, either through sound or direct physical contact, it can support relaxation, release tension, and help the nervous system shift out of a stressed state.

Working with the Body’s Energetic Field

We don’t just hold stress in our physical tissue. We also hold it in the energetic field that surrounds the body. Think of a stressful environment you’ve spent a long time in: a demanding job, a difficult relationship, an unhealthy space. Even without direct physical contact, that environment’s energy interacts with your own and it’s common to notice physical changes, like less tension or pain, once you’ve removed yourself from it. This is one reason stress and emotional patterns often show up in the energetic field surrounding the body before they ever become physical symptoms.

Tuning fork healing works with this field directly. Using specific frequencies, I’m able to sense where there’s disturbance or disharmony in a client’s energetic field, and use sound to help restore resonance and ease in that area, often before a related physical symptom has fully developed, or alongside it if it already has. In this way, tuning fork work shares something in common with Inherited Release Method: both involve working with the layers of the body that sit outside of direct physical touch, supporting the release of patterns, stories, and stress that may not be entirely, or at all, our own.

How Unweighted Tuning Forks Work

Unweighted forks are lighter, ring for longer, and are typically used just off the body, most often near the ears, or moved intuitively through the space around a client. Working with different note pairings and intervals, I introduce moments of dissonance and allow them to resolve back into resonance. This shifting tonal movement supports mental clarity, nervous system regulation, and an overall sense of calm.

How Weighted Tuning Forks Work

Weighted forks carry small weights on the ends of their prongs, giving them a heavier, more sustained vibration designed to be placed directly against the body, allowing the sound to travel into bone and tissue rather than just through the ears. I work with a range of these forks, each suited to a different purpose: some are especially supportive for physical tension and pain, others for grounding and re-centering, and others for supporting circulation and lymphatic flow. I also work with specific OM-tuned forks as part of a broader harmonic set for deeper sound healing work, and incorporate Zaphir chimes intuitively alongside them.

A Gentle, Intuitive and Potent Practice

While I trained formally in tuning fork therapy (Level 1 certification through Sound Healing Academy), I find this modality is best guided intuitively, responding to what each individual body and field seem to be asking for, rather than applying a fixed sequence to everyone. It’s an extremely gentle modality, appropriate for almost everyone, while still being remarkably potent, many people are surprised by how much can shift through something so soft and quiet.

As with any hands-on or frequency-based work, there are a few situations where tuning fork healing isn’t recommended, including pregnancy, near fractures or recent injuries, and for anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted medical device. If any of these apply to you, I’m happy to talk through what would be a better fit.

A Note on How I Work

Tuning fork healing is one of several modalities I’ve trained in alongside Inherited Release Method, Spinal Flow Technique, BodyTalk, Theta Healing, the Cardinal Method of Life Connection and Reiki but I rarely work from just one. Every session is formulated intuitively, in the moment, based on what your body is asking for. Some sessions call for tuning forks; others don’t. Some clients respond to essential oils as a sensory anchor; others don’t need them at all. There’s no fixed formula, because no two people or sessions are the same. The way I work is shaped entirely by what you, specifically, need in that moment.

If this resonates with you, I’d love to support you through this work. I invite you to book a session to begin or explore other modalities I work with to see how they come together in session.
